Philip Pullman asks what we should do to rekindle kindness, empathy and cooperation (Drip by drip, this nation has been poisoned, Journal, 11 December). The Brexit “debate” has taught me the significance of listening and making an attempt to grasp the place different individuals are coming from. Not all Brexiters are racist, ignorant and too silly to grasp the problems, any greater than all remainers are snug, self-righteous and unpatriotic.
Sadly, there are few locations the place remainers and Brexiters really meet and hear to one another. David Goodhart describes in The Street to Someplace two tribes with totally different values: the anyplace folks and the someplace folks. This evaluation was not properly acquired by most liberal or left-leaning folks, a lot of whom have been faster to criticise the opposite than look within the mirror. I’ve been shocked by the anger and lack of empathy amongst many remainers in the direction of Brexiters. In partial reply to Philip Pullman’s query, we have to get off social media and make an effort to fulfill and perceive these with whom we disagree. That is crucial (although not ample) to revive empathy.

• I reread Philip Pullman’s piece after the election outcomes and it made me cry. He and I are the identical era and he places into phrases my emotions precisely. We dwell in a democracy and so abide by the principles, however I’ll hold that article as a reminder that I’m not the one one who needs we had a society that might care for everybody.
